What is Defamation?
🖋️ “Defamation of character” is a catch-all term for any statement that hurts someone’s reputation. Written defamation is called “libel,” while spoken defamation is called “slander.” Defamation is not a crime, but it is a “tort”. A person who has been defamed can sue the person who did the defamation for damages.
📌 At common law, there are two types of defamation:
☘️ Libel – defamation in the permanent form, e.g., written words in articles, newspapers, Facebook posts, or Whatsapp messages;
☘️ Slander – defamation in the temporary form, e.g., spoken words.
